Do I need city approval to reroof a house on the North Hill?
It depends where the property line falls. The Stillwater Commercial Historic District downtown, listed in 1992, requires a design permit reviewed by the Heritage Preservation Commission before exterior work starts. Many hill houses sit outside it and need only the city building permit. We check your address against the district first, then pull what applies.
Leaves fill my valleys every fall. Is that why the roof leaks?
It can be. Packed leaf litter holds water in the valley long enough to work back under the shingle cut, and on a house with several valleys one clogged run is enough. Clearing them each fall helps. If the leak has been going a while, we check the deck and the valley metal underneath, since that is usually where the rot starts.
Can a turret or a bay be reroofed on its own?
Sometimes, and it is worth asking before you commit to the whole house. A turret takes hand cut shingles or formed metal and it is slow work either way, but the flashing at its base ties into the main roof, so we look at both before quoting one. If the field around it is close to the end, doing the turret twice is the version nobody wants.
