The details fail here long before the field does
A 1900 brick house near the Minnesota River and a 2015 walkout on a wooded lot fail in opposite ways. The old stock has narrow eaves, steep simple planes and masonry that punishes sloppy step flashing, so water usually shows up at a wall junction long before the field shingles are done. Newer plans stack gables, dormers and second story walls over lower roof planes, which multiplies the flashing and the valleys and puts most of the risk in the details rather than the deck. Out on open ground, wind is the deciding factor and edge details matter more than shingle brand. That shows up most plainly on the lake plats at Waconia where the houses along the shore take that wind head on, with nothing to break it.
