On the 1854 grid the walls are usually narrow clapboard buried under aluminum or vinyl, over board sheathing, not plywood. We strip back to the boards, check the sill and bottom course, then set the new lap at an exposure close to the original so the shadow line reads right. Grade is the trouble down on the terrace. A century of soil creep has pushed dirt up the wall, and a board sitting in it swells from the back. We either cut the grade away or start the siding higher on a trim board. Out in the post 1995 plats the walls are flat and the sheathing is sound, so the job is butt joints, kickout flashing and sealed field cuts.
