Honest Cedar Shake Roofing in Eagan, MN
Tree cover decides this one. A good part of Eagan sits under mature oaks, and shade keeps shakes damp long after a rain. Lebanon Hills, Patrick Eagan Park and the older streets around Cedar Grove carry canopy right over the roof planes. Before we talk grades and exposures, we look at what is growing above the house.

Shade, not weather, is what kills cedar in Eagan
Most of these houses went up in the mid 1980s: split entries and two stories with plain gable roofs and deep soffits. The roof geometry is easy for cedar. The lot often is not. Where oaks stand over the north or east planes, shakes hold water, moss takes the lower courses and the roof ages twice as fast as the sunny side. Clearing limbs helps, but state guidance says leave oaks alone from April through July because of oak wilt, and Eagan runs its own forestry program, so that work gets scheduled for late summer or winter. The deep soffits are an advantage: there is room for real intake venting, which dries the deck from below. On a canopied lot with no way to open the sky, we will point you at asphalt roofing and leave the cedar for a roof that gets sun.

Cedar under an Eagan oak canopy
Honest read on your tree cover
We stand in the yard first and look at what shades each plane through the day. Some Eagan lots are fine for cedar. Some are not, and that answer is free.
Intake venting in deep soffits
The wide soffits on these mid 1980s plans have room for continuous intake. Air moving from soffit to ridge pulls moisture out of the deck, which is how a shaded cedar roof survives a wet spring.
Limb clearing timed for oak wilt
Oaks should not be pruned April through July. If limbs have to come off before a cedar roof goes on, we schedule the work for late summer or winter so the tree side happens first.
Moss and needle removal built in
Shaded shakes grow moss at the butt ends where water sits. Keeping the lower courses swept and the roof clear of oak litter is the difference between a cedar roof that ages and one that rots.
The entry canopy handled separately
Those low pitch canopies over the front door catch snow off the main roof and hold it against the wall. Cedar does not belong there. We detail that small roof in metal and flash it into the siding.
The look that fits wooded streets
The look is the whole reason to take cedar on. On the wooded streets near Lebanon Hills and Patrick Eagan Park, a shake roof suits the houses in a way a printed shingle does not.
Why homeowners in Eagan call us for cedar
Rated 5.0 from 217 reviews
Our Google rating sits at 5.0 across 217 reviews. Cedar work is fussy and slow, and the people who left those reviews watched us do it on their own houses.
We check ventilation before we quote
Intake at the soffit, clear channels above the insulation, exhaust at the ridge. If the attic cannot breathe, cedar on a shaded Eagan lot will not last, and we would rather fix that first.
We work in the right order
Trees first, then venting, then the roof. Doing it backward means laying new shakes under limbs that still need to come down, and walking a finished cedar roof to do it.
Careful cleanup under big trees
Old cedar comes off in sharp pieces. We tarp the beds, keep the dumpster off the root zone of big trees and run a magnet over the drive before we leave.
Straight answers on repair versus replacement
If half the shakes are gone but the deck is dry, we will tell you a repair holds. If the underside is soft, we will tell you a patch is a waste and why.

Cedar and tree cover, answered
What people in Eagan ask us about this work. If yours is not covered, call and ask.
I have oaks over my roof in Eagan. Can I still put on cedar shakes?
Sometimes. It depends on how much sky the roof sees by midday and whether limbs can come off. A plane that stays in shade from morning to evening will grow moss and hold water, and cedar will not reach its normal life there. If you can open the canopy over the main planes and vent the attic properly, cedar works.
When can overhanging oak limbs be trimmed before a roof job?
Not between April and July. Oak wilt spreads through fresh cuts in that window, state guidance is to avoid pruning then, and Eagan runs a forestry division and an oak wilt program of its own. Plan limb work for late summer through winter, then set the cedar installation after the branches are down.
How often does a cedar roof need cleaning under heavy shade?
More often than the brochures suggest. Under oaks, count on clearing the roof twice a year, once after the leaves drop and once in spring, plus a moss treatment on the plane that stays shaded. In the open, once a year is usually enough. Shade sets the interval, not the calendar.
