Deep soffits are an advantage most houses waste
Two layers is the common find on these plans, and the second one often went down over flashing that was already tired. We take it all to the deck. The bigger correction is usually air: the soffits on a mid 1980s Eagan house are deep and were built to breathe, but blown insulation and missing baffles have choked the intake at the eave, so a ridge vent up top pulls from the house instead of from outside. We open the intake back up, then vent the ridge. The low pitch canopy over the front door gets its own treatment, membrane rather than felt, because snow sliding off the main roof sits there against the wall for weeks. If that canopy has failed twice already, metal roofing over just that section is worth asking about.

Does my Eagan split entry need ventilation work with a new roof?
More often than not, yes, and the problem is intake rather than exhaust. The soffits on these mid 1980s plans are deep enough to work well, but insulation has usually been blown over the eave and the baffles are missing. Adding a ridge vent without fixing that just pulls conditioned air out of your house.
