Experienced Cedar Shake Roofing in Apple Valley, MN
On the hills in Apple Valley, cedar wears out one plane at a time. A south facing slope on a Palomino Hills ridge goes gray, cups and splits while the north side of the same roof still holds its edges. Two houses off the same builder plan, three streets apart, can be years apart in roof age.

Sun ages the south side first
We walk each plane separately on an Apple Valley roof, because they are rarely in the same shape. A hundred feet of elevation change across town puts one house on a bare hilltop in full afternoon sun and another in a shaded low pocket three streets away. On the hilltop the south and west shakes cup, check and lose their edges first. In the low lot the north plane grows moss at the butt ends and stays soft. Then there are the apple trees Orrin Thompson planted in some of these plats, now hanging over the eaves, dropping fruit and leaves into the gutters and keeping the bottom courses damp. Where only one plane is spent, replacing that side alone is often the right call, though new cedar will not match weathered cedar for years. If matching matters more than the wood, asphalt roofing gives you one uniform color across the whole roof.

What repeated builder plans mean for cedar
Each plane graded on its own
South and west sides age years ahead of north and east on these hills. We rate every plane separately so you are not replacing wood that still has life in it.
Replace the sun side first
When only the hilltop facing slope is spent, we can take that plane down to the deck and leave the rest. New shakes will start off lighter and blend as they weather.
Apple trees kept off the eaves
Orrin Thompson put an apple tree at each house in some of these plats, and those trees now reach the gutters. Fruit, leaves and shade at the eave line rot the bottom courses first.
Details that repeat down the block
Because the same builder plans repeat lot to lot, the garage tie in, the dormer and the low return show up again and again. The flashing detail that failed on one house fails on the next.
New cedar will not match at first
New cedar comes in warm and goes silver over a few seasons. On a street of matching houses that difference shows, and we would rather you hear it now than be surprised when the truck leaves.
Elevation decides your maintenance interval
A hilltop roof in full sun needs checking for splits and cupping. A shaded low lot needs moss cleared instead. Same city, same shakes, two different lists of chores.
The way we run an Apple Valley job
Photos of every plane, every time
You get pictures of all four sides with the splits, cupping and moss marked, so you can see why one plane is being replaced and another is being left alone.
Open twenty four hours, seven days
Storms here come through in the evening. We answer at any hour, and when shakes are gone off a hilltop plane, getting the deck covered the same night matters.
We have seen your house before
These blocks were built from a handful of plans, so the roof we are quoting usually looks like one we have already opened up. We know where the water gets in.
Phased work when it makes sense
If two planes still have years left, we will lay out doing the spent side now and the rest later, rather than pushing a whole roof you do not need yet.
We will read the other estimate
Bring us the other estimate. On these repeated plans we can usually tell from the line items whether the flashing and the plane count are right, and we will say so.

Questions from Apple Valley homeowners
What people in Apple Valley ask us about this work. If yours is not covered, call and ask.
Why is the south side of my Apple Valley cedar roof worn out and the north side fine?
Sun and heat. The south and west planes dry hard after every rain, and that cycle cups the shakes, opens checks and wears the edges. North planes stay cooler and hold their shape, though they collect moss instead. On a hilltop lot the difference is stark, and it is normal to see one side spent while the other has years left.
Can you replace just one slope instead of the whole roof?
Often, yes. Cedar goes on plane by plane, so a spent south slope can come off and be rebuilt while sound planes stay. The catch is color: new shakes read warm and light next to weathered silver, and it takes a few seasons to blend. If that bothers you, do the whole roof.
Do the old apple trees over my roof have to come down?
Not usually. What matters is the limbs directly over the roof and the ones shading the eave line. Thinning those opens the roof to air and keeps fruit out of the gutters, which is enough on most Apple Valley lots. A tree standing clear of the roof is not a problem for cedar.
Have each slope looked at separately
We will get on the roof, grade all four planes and send you photos with the estimate, so you can decide whether to do the sun side now or the whole roof at once.
