Seasoned Roofing Company in Chaska, MN
Cream colored local brick built most of the old houses near Walnut Street in Chaska between 1860 and 1920, and masonry changes how a roof gets flashed. Steep simple gables, narrow eaves and hard walls leave no room for caulk to cover a bad detail. Counter flashing has to be cut into a mortar joint, with the step flashing behind it.

Brick walls punish a caulked shortcut
Houses built between 1860 and 1920 near Walnut Street have simple roofs and difficult edges. The gables are steep, which sheds water well and makes staging harder, and the eaves are narrow, so there is little overhang to keep runoff off the wall below. Where a roof dies into brick, the counter flashing belongs in a cut reglet with the step flashing tucked behind it. Caulk smeared on the face of the masonry buys a season and then lets water into the wall, where it freezes. Expect a tear-off here to include chimney flashing, because the chimney is usually the oldest detail on the roof. On the newer stock around Jonathan, hail beats up the walls too, and a steel siding replacement is usually a better answer than patching dented panels twice.

What roofing in Chaska actually involves
Narrow eaves put water on brick
There is little overhang on these old houses, so runoff lands close to the wall. A gutter apron and a gutter that is actually pitched keep water off the masonry, and that matters more here than on a house with a two foot soffit.
Pocket hail corridors that repeat
Hail here runs in narrow corridors, and the same streets get hit again. Chaska took golf ball to egg sized stones on August 9, 2020. If your block was in that path, we photograph and date the roof so the next claim has a record.
Careful work in the historic district
The Walnut Street Historic District covers about 17 acres between Walnut, Second, Chestnut and Sixth, listed on the National Register since January 1980. Lots are tight. We stage off the street, keep dumpsters clear of masonry, and settle on shingle color before anything is ordered.

Chaska questions
What homeowners here ask us most. If yours is not covered, call and ask.
Can you match shingles on an older Chaska brick house?
Color matters more than usual against cream brick, since a gray that reads blue on a white house can look cold here. We bring boards to the house and look at them on the wall in daylight. Matching an existing discontinued shingle exactly is rarely possible, so on a partial repair we will tell you if the patch is going to show.
What is under a 100 year old roof in the Walnut Street district?
Usually plank decking rather than plywood, sometimes with gaps between boards where the original wood shingles were nailed. Wide gaps will not hold a modern fastener, so those areas get sheathed over before the underlayment goes down. We also expect to find more than one layer. Both come off, since nailing new shingles over old hides exactly the rot an inspection is meant to find.
Hail dented my steel siding in Chaska but the roof looks fine. What now?
Soft metal takes the first hit, so dented siding, gutter aprons and vent caps can show damage while the shingles look intact from the ground. It works the other way too. We inspect both, and if the panels are dented across a whole elevation and the color is no longer made, we will say that patching is a waste and replacement is the honest call.
