Is a metal roof loud in the rain?

Will a metal roof make my house hotter in summer?
The opposite, in most cases. Factory finishes reflect a large share of solar energy rather than absorbing it, and the airspace under the panel carries away much of what is left.
Can metal go over my existing shingles?
Sometimes, over a single flat layer with furring. We still prefer a tear-off, because it lets us see the deck and correct the ventilation while the roof is open, and both of those decide how long the new roof lasts.
