Classic Clay Tile Roofing in Eden Prairie, MN
Clay tile is the oldest roof covering still in normal use, and on the right elevation nothing else reads quite like it. Fitting it in Minnesota means starting with the two questions warmer regions can skip: will the structure carry the load, and is this tile actually rated for our freeze cycles.

Two questions before anything else
A clay roof weighs several times what asphalt weighs, so we verify the framing before we quote rather than after. Then we specify grade one tile rated for severe weathering, because a tile bodied for a mild climate will spall the first winter it takes on water and freezes. Battens, an elevated fastening system and generous underlayment do the rest, since on a tile roof the underlayment is genuinely the waterproofing layer and the tile is the wear course. Owners who love the profile but cannot take the weight should read our Brava tile roofing page, which achieves a similar line at a fraction of the mass.

What the work includes
Every clay tile roofing quote we write covers the following as standard, not as an upsell.
- Structural load review before any tile is specified or ordered
- Grade one, severe weathering rated tile suited to our freeze cycles
- Elevated batten system so water drains beneath the tile course
- Heavy underlayment treated as the true waterproofing layer
- Bird stops, eave closures and matching ridge and hip tiles
- Attic stock left on site for future individual replacements
Why homeowners choose clay tile roofing
A century of service is normal
Clay outlives the fasteners and the underlayment beneath it. A tile roof is usually renewed by relaying the same tile over new underlayment rather than replaced outright.
Color that is fired, not applied
The color is in the fired body of the tile, so it does not fade off the surface the way a coated product eventually does.
It does not burn
Clay is non-combustible, which is meaningful on properties with wood-burning appliances or exposure to neighbouring structures.

Clay Tile questions
What homeowners ask us most about this work. If yours is not here, call and ask.
Will clay tile survive a Minnesota winter?
Grade one tile rated for severe weathering will. Tile bodied for mild climates will not, because it absorbs water that then freezes and spalls the face. The rating is the whole decision, and we will not fit an unrated tile here.
Does my roof need reinforcing to take clay?
Some do. Clay is several times the weight of asphalt, so we have the framing reviewed before specifying. Where reinforcement is needed we scope it up front rather than discovering it mid-project.
What happens if a tile cracks?
It lifts out and a replacement goes in, without disturbing the surrounding field. This is why we leave attic stock with you: a tile from the original run matches in a way a current batch may not.
