Complete Steel Siding Replacement in Buffalo, MN
Water covers better than a quarter of Buffalo, and the open fetch across Lake Pulaski and Buffalo Lake drives rain sideways into gable ends instead of down them. That is the wall problem steel siding replacement is being asked to solve here, on lakeside slopes where the weather arrives horizontally and finds every unsealed lap.

Wind driven rain gets behind the panel
Two kinds of houses call us in this town. The older blocks around the courthouse sit on the original 1856 plat, and the lake homes on Buffalo Lake and Lake Pulaski went up around them, so eave height, pitch and roof tie-ins change with the address. What does not change is where the water gets in. Steel sheds rain fine on its face, but sideways rain finds the gable end returns, the window heads and the spots where a roofline dies into a wall. We detail those first: house wrap lapped correctly, head flashing over every opening, kick out flashing at the roof to wall, and a drainage gap so anything that gets past the panel has somewhere to go. Careless work here rots sheathing quietly. If steel is more than the budget carries, vinyl siding replacement over the same detailing still beats a pretty panel over a wet wall.

Steel Siding Replacement in Buffalo
Steel on a wall that faces open water
Flashing that faces the fetch
Head flashing, kick outs and sealed gable returns go in before a panel does. On a wall that takes rain from the side, the flashing is what keeps the house dry and the steel is what keeps the flashing covered.
Panels that do not lift
Steel locks course to course and fastens to the studs, so a gust off the lake cannot get a fingerhold under a lap the way it does under old vinyl butt joints.
Freeze thaw does not crack it
Vinyl gets brittle in a Wright County January and a windborne branch punches straight through it. Steel stays a wall at twenty below, which matters on the lake side where nothing blocks the weather.
Room for the panel to move
Steel expands and contracts with the season. We slot the fastener holes and leave the laps room, so panels on a long lakeside elevation stay flat instead of buckling by the first warm week.
Less wall maintenance near water
Walls this close to open water grow more green film than walls in town. Steel with a baked finish rinses clean and does not hold moisture in the seams, so upkeep is a hose and a soft brush.
Rot found before it spreads
Taking the old siding off is when we find the soft sheathing under a window head or behind a gable return. We show it to you, replace what is punky and go back with the wall dry.
Our habits on lake side houses
We check the shoreland rules first
Buffalo runs a shoreland overlay on Buffalo Lake and Lake Pulaski, so we confirm what your address needs before scheduling rather than after the panels arrive.
We measure before we quote
Every quote comes off real measurements of your elevations, not a square foot guess from the curb. Steel is cut to the house, so the numbers have to be right before material is ordered.
Tight sites, careful staging
Lake lots leave little room between the house and the water. We stage material where it will not kill your lawn or block the neighbor, and we keep the shoreline clear of cutoffs and screws.
Windows and siding in one scope
If the water came in at the window heads, new panels over old units just hides it. We do windows too, so the opening gets fixed while the wall is open.
We show you the open wall
Before the first panel goes on we walk you around the open wall so you see the wrap, the flashing and any sheathing we replaced. What is behind steel is invisible afterward.

Steel siding on lake homes
What people in Buffalo ask us about this work. If yours is not covered, call and ask.
Do I need a permit for new siding on a Buffalo lake lot?
Siding by itself usually does not add impervious cover, so it is not the piece the shoreland overlay is aimed at. Buffalo still enforces that overlay on Buffalo Lake and Lake Pulaski, and permits are required for decks, additions and other structures, so if the siding job includes any of that we confirm with the city before we start.
Will steel siding stop the water getting into my gable ends?
Not on its own. The panel is a rain screen, not a seal. What stops sideways rain is the wrap, the head flashing, the kick outs where the roof meets a wall and a gap that lets water drain back out. Steel done over sloppy flashing leaks the same as vinyl did, so we price the flashing work as part of the job.
Is steel worth it on an older house near the Buffalo courthouse?
It depends on the wall under it. Houses on the older Buffalo blocks often have board sheathing that is anything but flat, and steel shows every wave. If the walls need furring to take panels, that cost is real and worth knowing before you choose the material. On a straight wall with good exposure, steel is a long answer.
