Professional Custom Metal and Steel Buildings in Zimmerman, MN

The land around Zimmerman is not going to fill in the way subdivisions did. Sand Dunes State Forest sits about three miles west and the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge is close by, so a lot of ground here will never be platted. What that leaves is acreage, and acreage is where shops, equipment storage and hobby farm buildings go up.

Wind finds the doors before the roof

An EF-1 tornado touched down near Zimmerman on March 6, 2017 and tracked 8.9 miles to Princeton, part of the earliest tornado outbreak Minnesota has on record. Storms like that rarely peel a steel roof off first. They push in an overhead door, and once the building is pressurized from inside, the roof lifts at the ridge and the endwall goes. So the details we care about are the ones nobody looks at: anchor bolts set to the drawing and inspected before the pour, door jambs and headers braced for wind, and endwall bracing left in rather than cut out to make room for a shelf. Most of the buildings we put up here are shops beside a house on a few acres. If the use is storage and nothing else, prefabricated buildings can be the sensible answer, and we will tell you when it is.

What holds up on open acreage

  • Overhead doors braced for wind

The door is the weak point in a storm. We brace jambs and headers for wind pressure and set the track so a gust does not walk the panels out of the guides.

  • Anchors checked before the pour

Anchor bolt placement is easy to get wrong and expensive to fix. We set the template to the frame drawing and check it before the concrete truck shows up.

  • Rooflines that match the house

Homes here run steep pitches, deep soffits and long ridges over three car garages. A shop at the same pitch and color reads as part of the place instead of an afterthought.

  • Siting around well and septic

On acreage the drainfield, the well and the setbacks decide where a building can sit long before the view does. We locate all three before anything gets staked.

  • Storm damage on existing steel

If wind already lifted panels or bent a purlin on an older shed, we look at whether it is repairable before you decide to replace it. Sometimes it is a screw line and a few sheets.

  • Post frame or steel, whichever fits

A wood post frame is often less to build for cold storage. A steel frame wins when you want clear span, a hoist or a heated shop. We price the one that suits the use.

The way we work out here

  • Family run and faith based

In practice that means the crew cleans up your yard at the end of the day and you get a straight answer about what a change costs before you approve it.

  • Sized to the use, not a catalog

Tell us what parks inside and how tall it stands with the box up. The building gets drawn around that instead of around a round number somebody quoted you.

  • We look at the whole property

Where the driveway runs, where snow gets pushed and which way the wind crosses the field all change where the doors and the overhangs belong.

  • We work through the drawings with you

Before steel is ordered you see a set of drawings with door locations, the interior wall and the eave height on them. Changes are easy on paper and expensive after.

  • We take the small jobs too

A two bay shop on five acres is not too small for us. Most of what gets built around Zimmerman is that size, and we quote it the same way we quote a bigger one.

Questions we hear around Zimmerman

What people in Zimmerman ask us about this work. If yours is not covered, call and ask.

Do I need a permit for a shop building near Zimmerman?

Almost certainly, and which office issues it depends on whether you are inside city limits or in the surrounding township. Either way a new structure gets reviewed for setbacks, and on acreage the septic and well locations matter as much as the lot lines. We put the drawings and the site plan together for that submittal.

Is a steel building strong enough for the storms we get here?

It can be, if the openings are detailed properly. The EF-1 that tracked from near Zimmerman toward Princeton in March 2017 is a reminder that wind finds the doors first. Anchorage, jamb and header bracing and a properly fastened endwall matter more than panel thickness when the wind is pushing.

Should I build post frame or a steel framed shop?

It depends on what happens inside. For cold storage, hay or a couple of vehicles, a wood post frame is usually less to build and does the job well. If you want a clear span with no posts, a hoist, radiant heat or a finished shop, the steel frame is worth the difference. We will price both.
