Is LP SmartSide a good fit for a Bloomington rambler?
Usually yes. A rambler is a long low wall with few interruptions, which is the easiest shape for lap siding to sit on and the hardest place to hide a crooked course. We run a wider exposure so the wall reads horizontal, and we string the first course rather than following the old siding line.
The hardboard on my Bloomington split-level is only bad near the ground. Can you replace part of it?
On a small section, sometimes. On a whole elevation, it is rarely worth it. Old hardboard has swelled and moved, so new boards will not lock into the existing courses without a visible line, and the paint will never match. If the bottom of one wall is gone, the rest of that wall is usually close behind.
Will new siding stop the water problems where my low pitch roof meets the wall?
Partly. New siding lets us install kickout and step flashing correctly at that junction, which is where most of these leaks start. But if the roof itself is holding snow and backing water up under the shingles, siding will not fix that. We will tell you if the roof is the real problem, and we do roofs too.
