Start with the canopy over the front door
Every one of these mid 1980s plans has a low pitch canopy over the front door, and it is the first thing we look at. Snow slides off the main gable and sits on that canopy against the wall, so it needs a material rated for the pitch it actually has, not the pitch of the roof above it. Where the canopy is too flat for tile, we run standing seam metal there and tile the main roof, then detail the transition so the two never fight. The rest is ordinary steep slope work: tear off, check the deck under the deep soffit line, replace rotten sheathing, ice barrier at the eaves, then tile. If you want a heavier profile, ask about clay tile roofing as well, though few roofs of this vintage were framed with that in mind.
