A rambler ceiling holds the water and the wet insulation both. By the time we get there the board is bellied down between the joists, the paper face is separated, and the fasteners have popped along the strapping. That section comes out, and the insulation above it comes out with it, because blown fiber that has been soaked never loosens back up and it will keep the framing damp. Wind coming off the open bluff pushes rain in behind the fascia and wets the top plate, so the stain shows in a band along the wall rather than as a ring in the middle of the room.
