Pull the aluminum or the later vinyl off a Southside house and you find what is actually holding the wall together: board sheathing with gaps, original clapboard nailed straight to it, no water resistive barrier anywhere, and a hundred years of paint. Some of that paint predates 1978, so it gets handled accordingly. The wall itself is rarely flat, so furring and a proper barrier go on before the first LP board. Then the reveal matters, because in a designated district the exposure, the corner boards, the frieze and the window casing all have to read the way the original did. We flash the porch and dormer returns while we are there, since that is where the ice backs up.
