The typical Savage roof we quote was framed in the late 1990s or early 2000s with a lot of geometry: two or three gable planes dumping onto one lower roof, short valleys, and sidewalls that meet the coursing at an angle. Cedar handles that geometry only if the valleys are open metal, wide enough to flush, and the sidewalls get step flashing behind every course rather than a run of caulk. Where an upper plane discharges onto a lower one, we add a splash course and, on some houses, a kickout so the wall does not soak. Down in the sheltered inland streets the wind is not the problem, drying is, and some of those roofs are better served by asphalt roofing than by shakes that will never dry out properly.
