The village and the lake get different details
Two kinds of house sit under the same 55960 address. In the old village near the Middle Fork of the Zumbro, we take off cedar that has cupped and split through enough winters to let water past, and underneath there is often board sheathing with gaps, which has to be made solid before tile goes down. A few miles northeast, the Lake Zumbro lots stand open to the water, and there the details that matter are at the edges: starter course, edge metal, and how the field is fastened on a plane nothing shelters. The newer two story builds from the growth between 2010 and 2020 usually cross-shop metal instead of cedar, and we will quote both. On the rare house here with real tile, our clay tile roofing work uses the same edge details, just with more weight to plan for.

What changes when the cedar comes off
Shake look, none of cedar's habits
Cedar cups, splits and loosens through Minnesota freeze and thaw, and the shaded slopes down by the river hold moss. A composite shake profile gives you the same shadow line without any of that.
Color that holds on open lots
Shoreline lots northeast of the village take sun off the water with nothing shading them. Composite tile carries color through the material rather than in a surface layer that washes down the slope.

Old village houses often have gapped board decking under the shake, which was fine for cedar and is not fine for tile. We sheet over it or replace boards so fasteners have something to hold.

Damp air along the Middle Fork keeps north slopes wet, and asphalt in that setting streaks black within a few years. Composite does not feed that growth the same way.

We will not sell tile everywhere
If the detached garage or the porch roof does not need to match, we say so and keep the tile on the house. Not every plane on the property earns the material.

Can I get a cedar shake look on an old Oronoco house without real cedar?
