Often neither on its own. On these rooflines a valley dumps a lot of water at one spot, and without a kick-out flashing it goes behind the siding and lands at the window head. We check the flashing, the valley and the window seal before opening drywall, because guessing wrong means doing it twice.

Usually yes. The limit is not the drywall, it is the light. A big vault with windows at one end shows every imperfection, so the patch has to be floated wide and the texture matched closely. If the wet area crosses a whole plane, skimming the full surface is the better call.
