There is a brown ring on my Minneapolis bedroom ceiling. What caused it?
In an older house here, most of them come from an ice dam. Melt runs down the roof, refreezes at the cold eave, backs up under the shingles and gets into the wall or ceiling near the outside wall. The ring itself is old water. We check the attic to see whether it is still active.

Usually we repair it. If the plaster is still keyed to the lath around the wet area, we cut back to sound material and tie drywall into it. If the keys have broken over a wide area and the ceiling moves when you press it, patching is a waste and we will say so.
