Why does my Bloomington rambler ceiling stain in a straight line?
Because the water is traveling along a joist bay. Those long, low roof planes hold snow instead of shedding it, meltwater backs under the shingles, and once it drops through the decking it runs down the bay until a taped seam or a light box gives it somewhere to come through.
My split-level leak shows at the landing, but the roof above it looks fine. Why?
That is normal on a split. Water gets in high, runs down inside the wall between the two levels, and shows where the framing changes direction at the landing. The entry is often a flashing or a valley well away from the wet drywall, which is why we open the wall to follow it.
Do you replace the whole ceiling in a Bloomington rambler, or just the wet part?
Usually just the wet part, cut back to dry framing. The exception is a long open ceiling where the patch would sit in raking light with no break near it. On those we sometimes skim or re-texture the full plane, because a good patch in bad light still looks like a patch.
