Rosemount splits in two for this work. Near the old town center the houses are small and mid century, with simple roofs and mature yards, and some still carry cedar worth restoring. Is cedar a good idea out in Amber Fields with no trees yet?
It is one of the better spots for it in Dakota County. Cedar wants sun and air, and those roofs get both, so drying is not your problem. Wind is. On open former cropland the fastening and the ridge detail carry the load, and the surface will gray faster than it would under trees.
My older Rosemount house still has its cedar roof. Restore it or replace it?
Depends what is under the gray. Surface weathering is normal and does not mean the shake is finished. We pull a few, look at the thickness left, the nails and the boards underneath. If the wood is sound, replacing split shakes and redoing the flashing buys real years. If the shakes are thin, replace.
