The newest plats out here went up on former University cropland, and it shows. There is no mature tree cover, so those roofs take field wind with nothing to break it and full sun from morning to evening until the landscaping catches up, which takes years. Steep multi gable roofs on open ground also collect wind at the hips and ridges, which is where we tighten the fastening pattern rather than running the standard one everywhere. Near the old town center the job is different: smaller, simpler, lower roofs where the shake profile fits the house better than slate does. We measure the pitch before promising either one, because a shallow mid century roof has a floor below which tile is the wrong answer.
