Under the shingles, the deck is the question
The older neighborhoods here are 1960s and 1970s ramblers and split levels, and their decks are boards, not sheets. Boards shrink. Gaps open past what a shingle nail can bridge, and the nail spins in the gap instead of holding. So the first hour of a tear-off is a walk across the deck deciding what gets renailed, what gets a sheet of plywood over it and what has to come out. The 1980s and 1990s houses are simpler underneath. Then there are the shallow sections: entry roofs, porch tie-ins and the low plane over an attached garage, where shingles are not rated for the pitch. Ask what we would put there, and while we are at it ask about metal roofing for that section, which outlasts anything else that will fit.

My Coon Rapids roof was redone after the 2017 hail. Is it due already?
Probably not, but it depends on what was done. A full replacement from that August should have years left in it. A repair, where the damaged planes were redone and the rest was left, ages unevenly and usually shows it first at the transitions. Mismatched color between planes is the tell, and we can check the older sections.

No. Minnesota code allows no more than two layers, and a third adds weight the rafters on a 1960s or 1970s rambler were never sized for. It also hides the deck. We tear both layers off, look at the sheathing, replace soft boards and shingle over clean, dry wood with fresh underlayment.
