Why does one valley on my Anoka house ice up every winter?
Usually because that valley collects blown snow from two planes and the attic under it is warmer than the roof deck. Ice forms, backs up under the courses and finds the seam. Rebuilding the valley in open metal helps, but so does insulating and air sealing the ceiling below it. We look at both rather than just reshingling the valley.
Will a new roof match the character of an old Anoka house?
It can get close. Architectural shingles in a weathered gray or slate tone read better on a gable front house than a bright modern color, and the details matter more than the shingle: a straight ridge line, dark valley metal, and vents kept off the street facing planes. If the house is under heritage review, we confirm what is allowed before ordering.
There is cedar under my shingles. Does all of it have to come off?
Yes, if we are putting a new roof on it. Old cedar hides the deck condition, holds moisture and adds weight, and nailing into it does not give a shingle the hold it needs. Tearing it off adds a day and adds disposal, so we would rather find it in the estimate than on day two. Some of these old decks then need sheathing over the boards.
